A documentary about Javanese regents’ daughter Raden Adjeng Kartini, who lived from 1879 – 1903 in the Dutch East Indies. Kartini’s many letters, written in Dutch, which have been preserved, tell the story of her life as a young Javanese girl of noble descent, who feels hemmed-in as in a cage by the rules of “adat”. On the basis of these letters, by means of photographic- as well as archival film material, her dramatic life and times will be sketched.
With the voices of Yunita Rovroy, Yolande Bertsch, Guy Sonnen.
